In recent days, the 100th anniversary of its opening was commemorated by the L. Pasteur University Hospital in Košice. The "Old Hospital", as it is still called by the people of Košice, is the cradle of Košice medicine, which has given and continues to give impulses to the establishment of other hospitals in Košice and today represents a key provider of health care in eastern Slovakia as a university hospital in cooperation with partner hospitals.

At the ceremony attended by the highest state representatives, Director Ľuboslav Beňa awarded  a commemorative medal to key partner medical facilities, educational institutions, as well as 27 giants of Košice medicine in memoriam, whose importance exceeded the borders of the city and the region.

"A hundred years ... From the hospital's point of view, there are hundreds of thousands of lives saved and patients cured, and there are people behind it all. History is written by people, people are responsible for cooperation, processes are created by people. Staff is our greatest asset. He is responsible for the health of all of us," said Ľuboslav Beňa, director of UNLP Košice, at the benefit ceremony.

We have been helping for more than 20 years

"In the last twenty years of the hospital's history, U. S. Steel Košice has been a good neighbor and a good partner.  Since 2003, through donations or the USSK Foundation, we have helped mainly with the purchase of special instrumentation for various departments in the amount of more than 560,000 euros.

The hospital was also supported by employees, who collected a total of more than 57,000 euros in two collections in 2009 and 2010. The company and the USSK Foundation contributed to these collections with the same amounts as collected by employees.  Thanks to the first collection, they bought an adjustable operating table with special equipment.  The funds from the second collection helped the Department of Ophthalmology and the Eye Clinic. The most significant support, 200,000 euros, was used by UNLP last year to purchase special equipment for gynecology, urology and the eye department," Slávka Tvrdoňová, administrator of the U. S. Steel Košice Foundation, summed up the more than 20 years of help that the hospital received from our company.

We also helped UNLP during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it was the Clinic of Infectious Diseases and Travel Medicine, where, thanks to the support they received from our company, they could buy new equipment that helped doctors speed up and improve diagnostics. At that time, the paramedics received a new ultrasound and a portable ECG machine and other equipment.
