Micro-alloyed hot rolled high-strength steel S355MC-XF and S420MC-XF with a higher plasticity
CUSTOMER NEED
Customer who was satisfied with strength properties of micro-alloyed steel grades S355MC and S420MC according to European Standard EN 10 149-2; however, he required a higher drawability.
OUR SOLUTION
The Research suggested using a higher Nb content in combination with a lower C and Mn content. We achieved improvement in plastic properties and compressibility of the material through a fine-grain and homogeneous microstructure (grain refinement by thermo-mechanical rolling and precipitation of Nb(C, N)) with a reduced paerlite proportion. The material also shows significantly lower difference between the upper and lower yield strength compared to the equivalent commercial grade. This steel type has better welding properties as a result of a lower carbon CE equivalent.
Grade S355MC-XF has drawability A5 = min 30% (for comparison, Grade S355MC has A5 = min 23%) and Grade S420MC-XF has drawability A80 = min 24% (for comparison, Grade S420MC has A80 = min 16%).

CUSTOMER NEED
While processing steel strips into wheel rims using shaping and welding, the customer needed a high plasticity reserve, particularly at the edge of the steel strip.
OUR SOLUTION
New steel grade with a modified carbon and manganese content which, in combination with a
specific hot rolling process, ensured an improved plasticity of the material at the edge of the
strip and thus a high material yield during the wheel rim pressing.
This grade has the following mechanical properties:
Rp0.2 = 240-340MPa, Rm = 360-470MPa, |
A5 = min 30 % A80 = min 28 %. |
Evaluation of formability using the Circle Grid Analysis
CUSTOMER NEED
Circle Grid Analyses are focused on determining the size and type of local deformations on specific stampings of the customer. Using the results of these analyses makes it possible to define critical points of stampings and thus optimize the pressing process as well as the material used for specific stampings.
OUR SOLUTION
The Circle Grid Analyses were used e.g. when putting into production new hot rolled dual phase steel grade for the car disks production, when putting into production new galvanized dual phase steel grade for the car internal structural components, for dealing with complaints related to cracking compressor covers of hot rolled deep drawing grade, for dealing with a complaint related to the washing machine front panel produced from the deep drawing cold rolled material.

CUSTOMER NEED
The customers, mainly from the automotive industry, gradually switch to using higher strength steel grades. Whereas in the previous period mainly steel with guaranteed yield strength of min 260 to 380 MPa were used for production of car bodies, currently there are increased requirements especially for steel with guaranteed yield strength of min 420 to 500 MPa.
OUR SOLUTION
The Research designed new chemical composition and thermal-deformation treatment making it possible to produce these higher strength steel grades with a reduced variance of mechanical properties and thus high material yield during the pressing.
