Every year on May 22, we commemorate the International Day for Biodiversity, which was established by the United Nations to draw attention to the importance of the diversity of life on Earth.
Why should we care? Because biodiversity is not just a concept from biology textbooks - it is the basis of our daily lives.
Species-rich ecosystems provide us with clean air, water, food, and even medicines. Without them, our planet would not function. Yet biodiversity is disappearing at an alarming rate. Every year, human activity leads to forest loss, environmental pollution, climate change and ecosystem disruption. This is not just a global problem.
Every person and every society can help.
Industrial enterprises play a key role in protecting the environment. U. S. Steel Košice, s.r.o. is also aware of this responsibility and actively implements measures to support biodiversity in the region.
This includes planting native plant species, care and restoration of protective greenery, protection of wildlife, monitoring of birds in the vicinity of the company, raising awareness of employees and the community. The goal is not only to reduce the negative impact on nature, but to be a positive example that inspires other companies.
And what can we do? Small steps are enough:
- Give preference to local and seasonal foods.
- Plant plants suitable for pollinators.
- Save water and energy.
- Support biodiversity conservation projects.
The theme of this year's International Day for Biological Diversity is "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development". It reminds us that the future is in our hands, because only in balance with nature can we progress.
