U. S. Steel Kosice succeeds in national round of EU-OSHA competition

U. S. Steel Kosice has gained 1st place in the competion entitled Good Practice, organized as part of the Healthy Workplaces campaign by the National Focal Point of the European Agency for Safety and Health Protection at Work (EU-OSHA). The aim of this competition, which was originally named after the Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress campaign, was to draw attention to companies' best practices in actively managing stress as well as psycho-social risks at work, and to support the general public in taking inspiration from them.
The Kosice steelworks entered the competition with a project named A Workplace Without Stress = Nearing the Goal of Zero Injuries. The project presents the activities which the Company has been carrying out in the last two years in the area of safety and health protection, and which positively affect the quality of life of the employees.

First Gala Evening for long-serving USSK employees takes place

The first of this year's four gala evenings for steelmakers celebrating significant working anniversaries in 2014 of 30, 35, 40 and 45 years' employment at the Kosice steelworks took place on October 17. Colleagues from the Company management came together that evening with long-serving employees from the Color Coating and Tin Mill and the Shipping Divisions. The celebrators were personally presented with letters of thanks and gold or silver commemorative medals by top management members and KOVO Labor Union leaders, and those celebrating 40 and 45 years of employment also received the practical gift of a wristwatch.

Kosice-Saca Vocational School celebrates its 50th birthday

The Secondary Vocational School in Kosice-Saca commemorated the round-figure jubilee of its 50th anniversary with a celebratory academy meeting on October 16 this year. Among the guests were of course U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, Vice President Human Resources Martin Pitorak, and other Company managers. During its fifty years the school has educated thousands of specialists and experts who have found fulfilling jobs in Slovakian industry. Even today more than 3000 of them regularly pass through the gates of U. S. Steel Kosice.
The mutual linkage between school and steelmaking company enables the latter to acquire high-quality workers, and the students to gain not only theoretical but also practical knowledge and skills which make them substantially better prepared as specialists for the employment market. More than 70 students from this school are now getting work experience at the steelworks to support their studies.

Wishing Tree Project gets under way again

Kathleen Babcoke and the wives of other Company top managers had a meeting last week with the families of eleven Kosice steelworkers involved in the Wishing Tree project, as well as with children from the foster homes in Secovce and Nizna Kamenica, whose Christmas wishes will be granted by the Company employees this year. This charity project is being organized by U. S. Steel Kosice for the eighth time now.

George F. Babcoke meets the most successful marathon runners

It has become a pleasant tradition that after the Kosice Peace Marathon the President of U. S. Steel Kosice meets with the most successful participants from the ranks of the steelmakers. This year was no exception, and ten of our colleagues had the chance to share their experiences with George F. Babcoke at an informal lunch on Friday, October 17. Sitting around the table together with the first man at the Kosice steelworks, who successfully completed the Mini-marathon, were established running stars as well as newcomers to the KPM.
