LETTER TO HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENTS AND EU LEADERS

The top executives of the 60 most important steelmaking companies in Europe recently signed an open letter to the heads of state and governments of the EU countries, the President of the European Parliament, the outgoing and the newly-elected Presidents of the Council of Europe, and the outgoing and newly-elected Presidents of the European Commission, in which they present their view that the ambitious European­ climatic policy requires a strategy for strong industry in order to ensure the products, workplaces and incomes for the successful implenetation of that policy.­ This open letter was signed on behalf of the steel industry­ in Slovakia by U. S. Steel Košice President George F. Babcoke and Managing Director of Podbrezová Steelworks Vladimír Soták.

HANNOVER INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR WITH OUR INVOLVEMENT

Strong customer orientation and the slogan Building­ Value Together are the basic attributes which our Company will be presenting at next week’s EuroBLECH­ 2014 international trade fair in Hannover, Germany. This takes place from October 21 to 25, and this year sees the 23rd edition of this biennial event, which focuses on technologies for steel-sheet manufacturing and gives access to current developments and trends in this field. Two years ago the fair attracted­ over 60 000 visitors, and with stands present­ing more than 1500 firms from 39 countries and covering an area of more than 141 000 square meters, it ranks among the largest fairs in the world. After a six-year interval, U. S. Steel Košice is once again going to be present in Hannover.

ETP SLOVAKIA TO COLLECT AWARD IN BRUSSELS TOMORROW

The ETP Slovakia – Center for Sustainable Development non-profit organization is one of the winners­ of the competition for the European Economic and Social­ Committee’s Civil Society Prize 2014. This is awarded by the EESC in Brussels with the aim of acknowledg­ing and encouraging initiatives with tangible results developed by civil society organizations and individuals as well which have contributed significantly to the promotion of European identity and integration. Representatives of ETP Slovakia will be collect­ing their prize in Brussels tomorrow, October 16, personally from EESC President Henri Malossa. ETP has been working with marginalized communities in Eastern Slovakia for more than 14 years. It runs community centers set up in cooperation with local self-government bodies, providing social services for disadvantaged population groups. The organization’s project called Let’s Build Hope was nominated for the prize by EESC members Michal Pintér and Juraj Stern, and it caught the jury’s attention with its innovative and creative approach to resolving the housing problems faced by young families on low incomes in margina­lized Roma communities in Slovakia. The project focuses­ on the most active and highly motivated people from the settlements, who are then given help and provided with loans to be repaid over a ten-year period so that they can build their own houses on legally-owned plots of land. This project has been supported by several organizations, including U. S. Steel­ Košice.

KENYAN CHEPKWONY TRIUMPHS AGAIN AFTER FOUR YEARS

Sunday, October 5, saw the start of the 91st edition­ of the international Košice Peace Marathon. This popular athletics event featuring several distance-runn­ing and other associated disciplines cele­brated its grand 90th anniversary this year with a record total number of 10 200 participants. Once again the brilliant­ Africans did not let us down. Although­ the course record of 2:07:01 held since 2012 by the Kenyan Lawrence Kimaiyo survived, his countryman Gilbert Kiptoo Chepkwony put in the second-best winning time in the history of the Košice Marathon, at 2:08:26. Appearing in the colourful peloton composed of participants in all the day’s disciplines were more than 300 runners from U. S. Steel Košice.
