We help children develop their handyman skills

On Monday, the Leisure Center (CVČ) ceremoniously opened a specialist technical education classroom at its allocated workplace Juhoslovanská 2 in the Ťahanovce estate. It has a capacity of 24 students and thirteen fully equipped desks. We financially supported the equipment of the classroom through our grant program Together for the Region.

The idea of establishing a technical classroom focused on technical literacy in the Ťahanovce housing estate was related to the potential of the area. There are four elementary schools here, and other elementary schools and eight-year high schools from the city districts of Košice I and Košice III are available.

We learned more from Helena Labovská, director of CVČ Košice:

"Technical literacy is an educational activity aimed at increasing students' manual technical skills. It is intended to motivate them and help them choose their next course of study at secondary school. The goal is to learn the basic properties of materials and their use in practice. Also know basic hand tools for working with materials and know how to use them correctly. Manual skills from the technical field will come in handy for children in life, regardless of the field in which they are applied. If the primary school lacks a quality vocational classroom, it is difficult for children to acquire these skills. Based on our several years of experience with the operation of the technical classroom at Orgovánová 5, we came up with the idea of creating a similar classroom in the Řahanovce housing estate for elementary schools and eight-year high schools, which would satisfy the interest in this activity in the relevant catchment area."

The project with which they entered the grant call was called Smart children for the region. And clever children were also at the opening itself. Sixth-graders from the Church elementary school with the kindergarten of St. Gorazda were the first to try out the tools that the classroom is equipped with. The commotion of children and the sound of hammers, drills and sawing were a sure sign that the children were interested in the classroom. Our volunteer Radoslav Tomčo (in the photo), an operating electrician - foreman, from the Crane Maintenance operation, also helped them with a planer or a drill. He provided professional assistance during the installation of classroom technology. In the past, he professionally assisted in the adjustment of electrical classrooms at all workplaces that CVČ has in Košice.

Helena Labovská talks about further plans and use of the classroom:

"The classroom will be used for technical literacy educational events for children from registered schools that do not have specialist workshops. Here we will implement the practical part of the district rounds of the Technical Olympiad, the city competition of technical creativity and other competitions. In the morning, we offered the classroom to elementary schools. So far, three schools have signed up, so three mornings out of five are fully utilized. The classroom will also be used by pupils from the Juhoslovanská 2 Private Primary School for Pupils with Autism. We have contacted other schools and eight-year grammar schools in the city, I believe that we will fill the morning classes to full capacity. In the afternoon, we offer two interest groups for which we already have children signed up: Woodworking and Hobby workshop."
