Košice, June 19, 2024 – This coming weekend, hundreds of U.S. Steel Košice employees will once again selflessly help several local organizations. They will go to donate blood and also work voluntarily at places where they will join forces in the revitalization of areas for children, in the care of the environment and animals. The 18th year of the Steelmakers for Košice event will take place on June 21 and 22, 2024 and employees of partner institutions will also participate in selected activities.
The event starts with the Steelmakers Drop of Blood on Friday morning in the Hematology and Transfusion Department of the AGEL Hospital Košice - Šaca in the U. S. Steel Entrance Area, where they are ready to smoothly handle more than 80 free donors. Processed red blood cells or blood plasma will help people with serious diseases, after injuries and surgeries.
On Saturday morning, volunteers will help with the revitalization of the large area of the Center for Children and Families on Hurbanova Street. In the UPJŠ Botanical Garden, they will restore and repair the Mini Zoo, which is an attraction especially for families with children. In the ZOO, they will clean the breeding facility for penguins and repaint the fences of many animal enclosures. On the children's railway, they will install a fence around the children's playground at the Alpinka station so that children can play safely. Volunteers will also remove driftwood from the track and repaint the fence around the track. In the animal shelter near Haniska, they will make a shelter in the dog run. Few members of the HC Košice ice hockey team will volunteer here, too.
„Supporting the communities in which we live and work is a core value for U. S. Steel and our employees. It makes me immensely proud to work with such caring and giving employees, and in such a great community as we have here in Eastern Slovakia. This is the 18th year of this event and I want to thank all of my esteemed colleagues for continuing to give so generously with their time. I look forward to seeing the improvements, and hearing about the experiences,” said James Bruno, president of U. S. Steel Košice.
On Friday and Saturday, steelmakers and residents of the city can donate women's and men's seasonal clothing and shoes, especially T-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, sweatpants or sneakers. The 34 facilities of the Archdiocesan Charities Košice will also welcome long shelf-life food, bedding, kitchen utensils and hygiene supplies. The collection point will be open on Friday from 12 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the center of the Archdiocesan Charity at Masarykova 19 (historical building), as well as at Trieda SNP 24 in the civic association Jeseň života, where retired steelmakers help with the collection.
