Kosice, December 4, 2013 - Together with the opening of the Christmas Market on Main Street, U. S. Steel Kosice will be opening its Charity Christmas Hut tomorrow, where from December 5th to 22nd the Company will be giving the opportunity to 18 non-profit organizations to present their activities to the general public. Each day another organization will have space for that presentation and the proceeds from public fund-raising will go towards their further development. The hut will be staffed by volunteers from the ranks of the employees and the students receiving Company support for their studies at college or university. Presenting their activities and services to Kosice residents and visitors will be children's foster homes, civic associations for disabled children and adults, medical and educational organizations, and the only animal shelter in Kosice as well. On the very first day, December 5th, people will be able to contribute towards the purchase of infusion pumps and linear feeders for the Department of Children's Oncology and Hematology at the Children's Faculty Hospital in Kosice.

The fund-raising for this health-care institution during the pre-Christmas period is also being supported by the Kosice steelmakers. The proceeds from their collection will be trebled, since the same sum as the amount collected by the employees will also be contributed by the Company itself and by the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation. In the last few years the steelmakers have collected tens of thousands of euros for a mobile resuscitation bed for Children's Faculty Hospital or special equipment for the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Kosice, the East Slovakian Institute for Cardio-vascular Diseases in Kosice, the East Slovakian Oncology Institute in Kosice and other health-care institutions.

In addition to the Christmas fund-raising the steelmakers also help in other ways. Since 2005 they have been fulfilling children's desires through the Wishing Trees project. The employees take cards bearing children's wishes from the trees and buy presents which the children have been dreaming about. In addition to the wishes of children from St. Klement Hofbauer Foster Home in Podolinec, those of children from steelmakers' families in difficult circumstances have been added this year again. Apart from gifts and financial help everybody mainly appreciates the solidarity and experiences from many corporate events which they are invited to enjoy during the year, which also help them to cope even in hard times. Proceeds from selling the USSK Family Cookbook 2013, a dual-language book full of tried and tested recipes by Slovak and American employees and enhanced with original illustrations, will also help the foster home in Podolinec. The general public can join in the steelmakers' philanthropy as well by visiting the Charity Christmas Hut and contributing to any of the presented non-profit organizations. But the special cookbook linking cultures will be available at the Christmas Hut this Friday only.

There will also be a charity concert on December 6th in the Kosice State Theater, which is part of the steelmakers' Christmas philanthropy as well, and the final amounts for the families and organizations benefiting from the fund-raising will be announced there.
