National Maintenance Forum 2014 for the 14th time

On June 3 and 4 Strbske Pleso was the venue for the 14th edition of the annual international conference called the National Maintenance Forum 2014. The event was organized by the Slovakian Maintenance Society (SMS), which supports firms which promote development in the fields of technology, quality and safety in maintenance activities. U. S. Steel Kosice has been a founder member of the Society since the year 2000. The conference was attended by more than 200 maintenance workers from over forty firms in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany and Ukraine. For his lifelong work in the field of repair technology, improvement and innovation in maintenence, the SMS awarded the Maintenance Man of the Year 2013 prize to Lubomir Bejcek, inspecting locksmith in the section for inspection of reliability of Finishing equipment. The SMS award for the best final dissertation for Maintenance Manager on the topic of Scheduling of Maintenance Operations based on Risk Assessment in Safety, Quality and Accessibility was taken by Henricj Klajber, Maintenance Division Director. Volunteers in meeting with President George F. Babcoke

Twelve people of various professions, with different statuses and hobbies... And yet they have something in common. They help others, they make the world better and more beautiful, and many of them have attracted their colleagues and families into this activity as well. And they don't want anything for it. A good feeling is enough, they say. On Tuesday, June 10, the twelve enjoyed lunch with U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, and represented more than 500 people with similar thinking who took part on May 16 and 17 of this year in the eighth edition of the annual event called "U. S. Steel for Kosice" Volunteer Days. In an informal discussion lasting more than an hour and a half, they talked with the leader of the Kosice steelworks about what urged them to take up volunteering, but also about their share in each particular activity, the course and the results of their joint efforts, as well as the unfeigned pleasure which the feeling of well carried-out work brings.

Experienced managers in the role of mentors

In March of this year U. S. Steel Kosice started implementing the third in its series of Mentoring programs, based on the coaching approach and aimed at developing the specialist and leadership skills of a group of selected steelmakers. The participants in the current program met their mentors for an informal session on June 13, also attended by U. S. Steel Kosice President George F. Babcoke, Vice Presidents Martin Pitorak, Elena Petraskova, Mark Tabler and Christian Korn, and their immediate superiors. The President spoke to them, presenting mentoring as one of the firm's most important tools for building up and developing a core of future managers.

Medals and plaques for altruism

World Blood-donors Day, affirmed on June 14, was used this year once again by the Kosice City local branch of the Slovakian Red Cross organization for the official presentation of awards to volunteer blood donors. The 39 men and women who received Dr. Jan Jansky plaques and Prof. Jan Knazovicky medals for multiple volunteer blood donoring on June 17 increased this year's total of award recipients in Kosice to nearly 200 donors. As always there were of course U. S. Steel Kosice employees among them. Thanks to the support and motivation of the Company, many steelmakers feature among the active and regular blood donors in this city.
