Kosice steelmakers care about the fate of others
On December 5, the U. S. Steel Kosice Charity Hut was opened on Main Street, where from December 5 to 22 the Company is giving the opportunity to 18
non-profit organizations to present their activities to the general public. The pre-Christmas fund-raising for the Saca Hospital has also been supported by the Kosice steelmakers. The proceeds
from their collection was trebled, since the same sum as the amount collected by the employees was also contributed by the Company itself and by the U. S. Steel Kosice Foundation.
Mary Rintoul, the wife of U. S. Steel Kosice's President, supported the fund-raising with a special project - she has organized the publishing of the
bilingual cookbook, which links cultures and to which the recipes have been added both by Slovak and American employees. The joint financial gift will be used to buy a digital mammographic
device, to improve the accessibility of diagnostic treatment for women in Kosice and enables oncological diseases to be diagnosed earlier.
Wishing Trees have become another Christmas tradition for the steelmakers. This year they made a total of 147 children happy at the St. Klement Hofbauer Foster Home
in Podolinec, the Uralska Street Foster Home in Kosice, and in fourteen steelmakers' families who find themselves in straitened circumstances due to long-term illness or loss. The Christmas
philanthropy of the steelmakers culminated during the Charity Concert on December 7 in the Kosice State Theater, where the final amount of 96 496 euros collected for the digital mammographic
device was announced.
Three Kosice teams among the best in Europe
On December 5, U. S. Steel Kosice President David J. Rintoul, together with Vice-Presidents Mark Tabler and Martin Pitorak, met for lunch with participants of the worldwide Virtual Steelmaking Challenge to acknowledge their excellent results. The young Kosice engineers presented their knowledge among 1148 competitors from 37 countries and took second, seventh and ninth places in Europe by producing special steel grades with minimal costs.
