Kosice, May 16th, 2005 - The eleventh in the series of exhibitions at the U. S. Steel Kosice Gallery takes a unique and untraditional form. This
time there will be no paintings or sculptures on display, but figurines bearing the message of silent witnesses - women and children who have become victims of domestic violence. "Silent
Witnesses" is in fact an international initiative drawing attention to this problem, with the aim of preventing violence being committed in the household. The first exhibition of this kind was
put on in the United States in 1991. The first one in Slovakia was organized in 2004 by the women's interest group Fenestra, which is one of the most important organizations providing social,
psychological and legal assistance to victims of domestic violence.
The exhibition also involves the viewing of art works by the pupils of Irkutska Street elementary school, which in contrast present images of another world full of
joy and color.
The official opening takes place at 2.00 pm on May 18th, 2005, and the exhibition will be open to the general public from June 3rd onwards on weekdays between 8.30
am and 4.00 pm.
