Sports-ground or playground? Once again there's an all-encompassing Slovak word - ihrisko - which covers various kinds of facility, which in English have their own
specific terms - all linked with the idea of playing, but in different ways and by different people. A playground is something for (little) children, with swings, see-saws, slides prevent-fouc, roundabouts and
sand-pits (which are not intended as WCs for pit-bull terriers, despite their "owners" thinking otherwise).
A sports-ground is a kind of outdoor recreation area. It could have a running-track around the outside, with an athletics area or a soccer pitch in the middle, with
surfaces of clay (antuka), cinders (škvára) or grass (real or artificial), or recycled car-tires, granulated and compressed, known as rubber-rock (slippery when wet, as Jon Bon Jovi never fails to
point out). A pitch (soccer) or a court (tennis) is an area for playing a particular sport, marked out with white lines, which could be part of a sports-ground.
