STEELMAKERS HAVE BEEN HELPING FOR TWO DECADES

Košice, May 26, 2026 Employees of U. S. Steel Košice will traditionally help several local organizations. The jubilee 20th year of the corporate volunteer event Steelmakers for Košice will take place on May 29 and 30, 2026.

Deputy President of U. S. Steel Košice Mike Piekut appreciates the long tradition of the event: "The tradition of corporate volunteer days proves that the success of our company is not only measured by the numbers in the graphs, but also by the trace we leave in our surroundings. Our volunteers have been helping local organizations and communities for two decades. During that time, the places where they worked, the jobs they did have changed, but one thing has remained the same: their energy, their willingness and their huge heart. They have always been able to join forces and leave a mark. I am extremely proud that every year there are colleagues who devote their time to a good cause."

Isao Takenami, Vice President for Strategy at U. S. Steel Košice, added: "For me, this will be my first experience with the Volunteer Days in Košice, I am very much looking forward to it and my other colleagues from Nippon Steel will actively participate in the event, too."

The event will be opened by the Steelmakers’ Drop of Blood on Friday morning in the Hematology and Transfusion Department of the AGEL Košice - Šaca Hospital in the U. S. Steel Entrance Area, where they are ready to smoothly handle more than 80 blood donors.

It will continue on Saturday morning, when volunteers from the steel mills will help improve the premises in six institutions. In the Botanical Garden of UPJŠ, they will prepare the terrain for the creation of a wetland habitat, in the Košice Zoo they will paint metal fences and benches around the bison breeding facility, and on the Košice Children's Railway, they will renovate switch signals and a trolley depot. In the shelter near Haniska, they will be joined by members of the HC Košice hockey team in the reconstruction of dog dwellings and shelters. They will also work in the vast area of the Center for Children and Families on Hurbanova Street and in the Forrest Gump Club, a day care center for the disabled.

During both days, steelmakers, as well as the general public, can donate clothes and other useful things to people in need through a charity collection. Comfortable clothes and shoes are especially needed - T-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, sweatpants or sneakers. Long shelf-life food, bed linen, or kitchen utensils and hygiene supplies are also welcome. The Archdiocesan Charity Košice will distribute them to its facilities in eastern Slovakia. Two collection points will be open on Friday from 12 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the center of the Archdiocesan Charity at Masarykova 19 (historical building) and at Trieda SNP 24 in the civic association Jeseň života, where retired steelmakers help with the collection.
